Get Her in the Game: Empowering Girls Through Youth Sports
Sports have the power to shape lives — building confidence, community, resilience, and leadership. Yet across the nation, girls are participating in youth sports at lower rates than boys, and many drop out too soon. That’s the problem the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) is working hard to solve through its Get Her in the Game initiative. (NRPA)
Why This Matters
When girls engage in sports, they gain far more than physical strength. Participation helps them:
- Build confidence and self-esteem
- Form meaningful friendships and teamwork skills
- Develop leadership qualities they carry into adulthood
- Maintain better physical and mental health
Despite all these lifelong benefits, research shows girls are still less likely than boys to play or stay involved in sports — especially through adolescence. (NRPA)
What “Get Her in the Game” Is All About
Launched by the NRPA in partnership with Nike, the Get Her in the Game campaign is designed to help park and recreation professionals — who provide sports opportunities to millions of kids every year — break down barriers that keep girls from participating. (NRPA)
Key obstacles identified by the research include: (NRPA)
- Fewer opportunities for girls than boys
- Lack of women in coaching and volunteer positions
- Challenges navigating adolescence
- Limited access to equipment and play space
- Competing school, family, or work responsibilities
These factors make it harder for girls to stay in the game — and that’s exactly what this initiative aims to change.
Empowering Change in Communities
The campaign offers resources, tools, and guidance to help local parks and recreation departments create more welcoming, engaging, and inclusive sport environments for girls. Some ways to get involved include: (NRPA)
- Sharing campaign assets — Use social media graphics and the #GetHerInTheGame hashtag to spread awareness.
- Using creative templates — Customize Canva designs to promote girls’ sports in your community.
- Printing posters, stickers, and other materials to uplift the message.
- Telling your story — Share experiences from your community to inspire others.
- Considering coaching — Volunteer as a coach to support girls’ sports firsthand.
In addition, NRPA has developed practical guides and a Playbook for Parks and Recreation to provide strategies that agencies can tailor to their community’s needs. These tools are aligned with the broader Youth Sports Framework — designed to increase access and quality across all youth sports opportunities. (NRPA)
Be Part of the Movement
Change doesn’t require grand gestures. Even small, thoughtful actions — from encouraging a young girl to join a team to improving coaching support — can make a huge difference. As communities work together to Get Her in the Game, they’re not just increasing participation — they’re shaping stronger, more confident future leaders.
